Summer travel is in full swing, but before you pack your bags, take a moment to prep your compost pile. A little preparation now will ensure a healthy pile when you return.
First, check the moisture level. A dry pile won’t break down properly, and a soaking wet one can become a smelly, anaerobic mess. The goal is a moisture level similar to a wrung-out sponge. If your pile is too dry, add some water. If it's too wet, add some dry materials like shredded paper, cardboard, or dry leaves. This will help balance the moisture and prevent odors.
Next, give the pile one last good turn. This aerates the compost, mixing in any new materials and helping to keep the decomposition process active while you’re away. A well-aerated pile is less likely to become compacted or develop foul smells.
Finally, if you're leaving for more than a week, cover your pile. A simple tarp or lid will protect it from both heavy rain and intense sun. This helps maintain the ideal moisture level and temperature, so you won’t come home to a pile that’s either waterlogged or baked dry. This is a good extra step, even if you're not leaving town.
By taking a few minutes to do these three simple steps, you can leave for your trip knowing your compost is in good shape. Happy travels.
